Whole Planet Foundation
ONE DOLLAR A DAY
With the support of Whole Planet Foundation, four American college students have pledged to live for 9 weeks on the equivalent of $1 a day in order to draw attention to the plight of over 1.1 billion people living on under $1 a day, in abject poverty. Their goal is to raise $100,000 dollars, 100% of which will support Fonkoze and Banrural Grameen Guatemala, Whole Planet Foundation's microfinance partners in Haiti and Guatemala. Fonkoze and Banrural Grameen Guatemala are the largest microfinance institutions in Haiti and Guatemala and target the poorest of the poor in these global communities where Whole Foods Market sources product.
From their website:
"Understanding the reality of poverty is the critical step in addressing the problem. Time and again, microfinance has been proven to be a reliable and effective method of combating poverty. With the goal of educating others to the reality of living on a dollar a day and helping to contribute to a solution through microfinance fundraising, we wish to create a documentary that will be impactful and engaging to our fellow university students, who have the potential to create the innovative solutions needed to combat world poverty. By living on less than one dollar a day for nine weeks in a rural Guatemalan village working as subsistence farmers, we hope to bring attention to the pivotal role that microfinance can play in empowering the poor."

" Sometimes, we forget that there are those less fortunate who are struggling day to day for food, water, and shelter. Whole Foods is doing a wonderful service by involving their Team Members in this program and by raising awareness in our communities. It is a great feeling to know that I work for a company that values the importance of helping others."
Crystal is a Customer Service Supervisor at the Whole Foods Market Oracle store in Arizona and she will be heading to Guatemala this summer as a Team Member volunteer.
