Black Sheep Bakery
Portland, OR
In Black Sheep Bakery's 9 years of business, they've given 820,000 chickens a day off.
Amanda Felt started Black Sheep Bakery in January 2000 with a pick up truck, a corner of rented kitchen space and a few friends with coffee shops. The company made its mark by creating a line of vegan baked goods that anyone would want to eat. And eat they did. Felt quickly quit her day job and lassoed accounts with Peet's Coffee and Tea, Whole Foods and a smattering of New Seasons locations. But something was missing.
After two years of growing sales in Portland coffee shops, cafes and groceries, Felt decided to dip her toes into the wild world of retail. By 2005 Black Sheep Bakery began selling at the Portland Farmers Market and opened the company's first coffee shop, complete with bike-thru window. We now sells to 65 stores in the Portland/Vancouver area, pitch our tent at 3 farmers markets, operate two cafes, make vegan brides and grooms happy and just launched a line of vegan/gluten free artisan chocolates.
"We are constantly working to gratify the changing priorities of our customers; whether it be with a greater variety of gluten free items or simply not raising our prices. Our intention is to remain an approachable and adaptable company."
D.A.M. Salsa
Portland, OR
D.A.M. Salsa was served to our customers at La Casa de Rios, our family restaurant in Southeast Portland, from 1972 to 1984. A traditional New Mexican recipe, it has always been a favorite in the Martinez household. D.A.M. Salsa is now available at all Whole Foods stores in Oregon and now in Seattle. It is the same recipe, still made with the same attention and care as it was years ago when we proudly served it to our friends and patrons at La Casa de Rios. I hope you enjoy my salsa. It’s just one of many traditional recipes brought from New Mexico by my parents. For many generations these recipes have been served to our family and friends. Today, I am happy to be able to share this all natural, gluten and preservative free salsa with you and yours.

J. Christopher Wines
Portland, OR
Located in Oregon's Northern Willamette Valley, J. Christopher Wines is a small winery that specializes in Pinot Noir made in the traditional style of Burgundy. It is owned by Jay Somers, who has been making wine in Oregon for more than 15 years. Jay's wines are hand-crafted in small lots and are sourced from some of the best vineyards in Oregon.
The philosophy at J. Christopher is to produce wines in an Old World style that emphasizes focus, length and balance. As Jay puts it, "We do not make sweet red fruit bombs! We want wines that have a fine balance of fruit, acidity and texture. We want wines that give you more than just a big mid-palate blast — wines that are complete."
When Jay and Ernst Loosen met some years ago, they quickly realized that they shared a similar taste and passion for Pinot Noir. Together, they produce "Appassionata," a finely selected, limited-production Pinot Noir from Oregon's Willamette Valley. In addition, Dr. Loosen's U.S. import company, Loosen Bros. USA., now offers a selection of Jay's wines, including the Dundee Hills Pinot Noir, to a wider market.

PaleyBar
Portland, OR
From Vitaly Paley, the 2005 James Beard Foundation Best Northwest Chef award winner, and co-owner of Paley's Place Bistro & Bar in Portland, Oregon, comes the most exciting news in the nutritional energy-bar market: the PaleyBar™. PaleyBar stands out from the rest because it tastes delicious and uses no artificial ingredients.
The recipe, based on organic fruits and other ingredients grown on local farms, was developed by Chef Paley out of creative vision borne of necessity.
An avid cyclist, Chef Paley tried every brand of energy bar over the years. Frustrated by the taste and quality of these bars, Chef Paley decided to create an alternative energy bar for himself, and, he imagined, for so many others who were tired of the same old flat flavors and even flatter textures.
The PaleyBar is an extension of Chef Paley's practices at the restaurant. It is put together with the same care and attention to detail as every dish in his restaurant. The result is satisfying and chewy, made from wholesome organic ingredients, such as apricots, raisins, strawberries, figs, peanuts, oat bran and honey.

Turtle Island Foods
Hood River, OR
I started Turtle Island Foods in 1980 at the Hope Coop in Forest Grove, OR on my life savings of $2500.00 that I earned as teacher/naturalist in the Portland outdoor schools. Our first product was tempeh which I delivered in my beat up Datsun to Natures, Food Front, King Harvest and Peoples Coop. I lived pretty cheap for the first 15 years, seven of which were spent in a treehouse I built near the tempeh plant in Husum, WA. In 1995 we put the first 500 Tofurky Roasts in stores throughout the NW along with our good friends Hans and Rhonda Wrobel of the Higher Taste. Since then our lives have changed but our vision of creating a sustainable world with delicious plant based proteins remains the same. If you are up in Hood River at the Full Sail Brew Pub stop in next door and say hi!
Two Brothers
Portland, OR
On a cold winter evening just before Thanksgiving in 1994, Sam and Peter, eight and nine year old brothers, made a ‘chocolate concoction’ to pour over ice cream. ”This is great,” Peter said. ”Maybe we could make more and sell it for Christmas present money!” So with a little help from Mom and Dad, they filled a Red Wagon with forty jars. After a jaunt around the neighborhood, the red wagon was empty and the boys had a cigar box full of money. So the story of “Two Brothers” was born. For the first several years Peter and Sam sandwiched their business between soccer and school, doing demonstrations and tastings in local stores and Farmer’s Markets. Their parents taught them about business and kept track of schedules. The boys managed sales and profits, and helped with their label design and marketing ideas. Today, Two Brothers is in their eleventh year of business. The boys have traded in their red wagon for the local farmers markets. Both Peter and Sam have graduated college and continue their involvement in the day to day operations of Two Brothers Foods.
